What is Pincode ?
The Indian Postal Service introduced the Postal Index Number (PIN) code system on August 15, 1972, to streamline mail delivery across the vast and diverse nation.
A PIN code, or Postal Index Number, is a unique code assigned to different regions, localities, and post offices across India. These codes serve as postal addresses that help postal workers and sorting systems efficiently route mail and packages to their intended destinations. India's PIN code system is a six-digit numerical code, each part of which holds specific information about the destination.
1. The First Digit: The first digit represents the region or zone of the destination area. India is divided into nine PIN zones, with the northernmost regions starting with '1' and the southernmost with '9'.
2. The Second Digit: This digit refines the location within the zone, often denoting a sub-region or circle.
3. The Third Digit: It further narrows down the location, typically indicating a district or a larger area within the circle.
4. The Last Three Digits: These are unique to a specific locality or post office within the district, ensuring precise delivery.
